On a trip in the Gambia you should definitely get a touch of the local atmosphere!

An experienced guide as Amadou is definitely a must!

Gambia is a small country, so most trips are half-day trips. Of course you can also combine trips but in warm weather, it is usually pleasant for morning excursions!

Exception is the Tanji fish market, here come the local fishermen from 4 p.m. in the afternoon with their catch of the day and you go so best by then!

Kachikally (crocodile Pool).

From Bakau you will drive over a dirt road in order to come to the Crocodile Pool.

This is a pond full of crocodiles, of which people used to (some still do) believe it had a "healing power". Sprinkle yourself with this water and it will prosper pregnancy.

There is a small African Culture Museum, and under supervision you are able to pet the crocodiles.

Lamin Lodge.

The Lamin Lodge is a building which is built on poles and standing in the water of the Gambia River, in the middle of the Mangrove Forests.

The trip to the Lamin Lodge is bumpy but fun, and when you are here you can see the Mangrove grow and many monkeys wandering around. Besides the monkeys and Mangroves you can see how cement is made from shells or just enjoy the wonderful view during a nice meal.

Tanji

Tanji is a bigger fishing village than Bakau, but also much more visited by tourists.

At the end of the day the boats come back and sell / prepare the fish straight on the beach from the days catch.

The men capture and carry the fish while the women are sell them.

Lokale Markt van Kololi, Serrekunda of Banjul.

Visit the local market together with Amadou, it is a real local market where you will not see many other tourists.

Just walk around and experience the local market and gather information about all the local dishes and ingredients.

Definitely worth the visit during the morning.

Makasutu Cultural Forest.

This reserve extends over around 10km² of riparian forest, savannah and mangroves, and supports plenty of wildlife.

Also around very habituated 200 Guinea baboons, but also various smaller primates, antelope and carnivores, and aquatic creatures such as crocodile and the occasional West African manatee.

The marine and terrestrial birdlife is stunning too.

Bijilo forest park. (monkey forest)

The monkey park is also known as the Bijilo forest park near Senegambia beach strip.

It is a forest near by Kololi where you can spot two out of three kind of monkeys who live in the Gambia.

These are the green velvet monkey. Always friendly and hungry. The other species you find here are the red colobus which have red belly and grey back and are always in the trees.

Abuko Nature Reserve.

A small nature reserve in Gambia, the Abuko Nature Reserve is located in the surroundings of beaches.

Despite it’s small size, the Abuko Nature Reserve is home to a variety of wild animals such as hyenas, lions, guibs, different varieties of monkeys, crocodiles, porcupines and numerous birds and other animals.
